Can Too Much Facebook Cause Depression?

Friday, December 18th, 2009

I have to admit that I am one of the first people to constantly get on Facebook through my iPhone, and why wouldn’t I be? Pretty much all of my friends and family will update their Facebook profiles directly from their iPhones, especially since it is such a convenient way to stay connected and up to date. Still, one recent study is suggesting that adolescent girls may have depression caused by using Facebook too often.

There was a study done on 83 girls who were around the age of 13, and they found that the girls who spend more time on this social media site had higher levels of depression. The theory goes that all of this social media interaction, like texting and instant messaging, makes it easy for teens to have high anxiety and depression. I guess the moral of the story is to use Facebook in moderation, and don’t substitute it for real people in your life. Social media is a wonderful thing, and it provides the opportunity to connect with people all over the world. On the flipside, it also poses the risk of not truly connecting with the people that you see every day if you are using it too often.

I Love My iPhone

Friday, October 30th, 2009

iphoneOh, the addiction of having an iPhone! I promise you that everywhere I go, I see people all over the place on their iPhones. No matter what you are using it for – shopping, gadget reboot, or even Facebook, it is a very popular device. I have to admit that I was at first very reluctant to turn to the dark side and start using an iPhone. I did have a contract with AT&T, so it was readily available to me. I guess I just wanted to be that person that stays in the past and uses my regular old cell phone.

I was kind of thinking that the iPhone was probably not as cool as it was hyped up to be, but I was wrong. It was much better! I was just thinking that Apple was cleverly creating all of these commercials to seduce us into buying this device, but it really is an awesome and amazing device. I use it for all sorts of things, but most of the time, I just dawdle on my iPhone and obsess over Facebook. Maybe that is actually a bad thing, and one reason why I should not have gotten this device, but now it’s too late!
